Pathology portal

The PALGA portal offers researchers and pathology labs an easy way of requesting and managing pathology data, samples and/or clinical data. By offering a one-stop-shop, researchers now no longer have to send out multiple requests to multiple labs but can request data from one central point in the Netherlands. By allowing for and stimulating optimal, safe and shared use of available pathology tissues and data, the PALGA portal improves efficiency of research and makes data collection quick and easy.

What is the PALGA portal?

The PALGA Portal (Pathologisch-Anatomisch Landelijk Geautomatiseerd Archief) is a one-stop online portal, combined with a logistic infrastructure, for the request and delivery of pseudonymized data, samples (mostly FFPE blocks and tissue slides) and clinical data that are available through more than 45 pathology labs in the Netherlands.

Why the PALGA portal?

Instead of having to send out multiple requests to multiple labs, researchers now have a single online entry point to request and receive what they need for their research. The PALGA Portal allows for and stimulates efficient, optimal, safe and shared use of available pathology tissues and data.

Intended users

The PALGA portal is especially intended and developed for use by researchers that would like to request pathology data, samples and/or clinical data, and for pathology labs that would like to have a tool to manage their own requests, and to display and offer-for-use their pathology collections.

How to use the portal

Requests to use the portal can be made through Aanvraag PALGA and more information can be found here.

Additional information

The PALGA Portal and accompanying infrastructure are maintained and serviced by PALGA (the nationwide network and registry of histo- and cytopathology in the Netherlands) in collaboration with WP4 of BBMRI-NL. The portal was developed within the Dutch National Tissue Portal (DNTP) project under BBMRI-NL1.0 in collaboration with The Hyve and was launched in November 2015. Since then, it received over 500 requests and handled more than 40.000 tissue blocks, slides and pathology reports.

PALGA is developing innovative ways to link pathology data and material to other sources (e.g. from the Parelsnoer Institute and Life Lines).

On May 25, 2018, Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force. This regulation replaces the Dutch Wet bescherming persoonsgegevens (Wbp). Here you can read more about the implications of the GDPR for the PALGA Portal and the use of pathology data and material for scientific research.
